GLOSSARY OF TERMS

You won't want to gloss over the difference between a Brut and a Demi-Sec.

 

SPARKLING WINE & GEOGRAPHY

Champagne - A sparkling wine made in France

Spumante Asti - A sparkling wine made in Italy from Moscato (sweet) grapes

Prosecco - A sparkling wine made in Italy, usually sweeter than Champagne

Cava - A sparkling wine made in Spain using the same method as Champagne

 

WHAT IT'S MADE FROM

Cuvee - A confusing term that can either mean a blend of grapes OR the "first-pressed" and best grapes

Blanc De Blanc - Made solely from white grapes

Moscato - A very sweet grape

 

REGARDING SWEETNESS

Extra Brut - No sugar whatsoever 

Brut - Dry with no sweetness

Extra dry or Extra sec - A tiny bit of sweetness

Sec - Noticeably sweet

Demi sec - Sweet

Doux - Very sweet
